The managing director position is the top role within the investment banking department. Managing directors have a larger amount of responsibility, as they oversee all operations that come through the bank. They are in charge of hiring and firing employees, setting policies and priorities for their team members, and giving direction on deals that need to be pursued. Usually only the most senior investment bankers become managing directors.

Managing directors are paid on a very high level, earning an average salary of $1 million plus a 100-200% bonus. This number can vary greatly depending on the bank and location where they work.
